🌿 Responsible Camping

The Golden Rules of Responsible Wild Camping in Réunion

Réunion is a UNESCO-listed natural paradise. Its wild camping spots are free and open to all — but they will only stay that way if every van-lifer respects them. 10 essential rules for responsible camping.

📅 22 March 2026⏱️ 8 min read🚐 Van La Réunion

Réunion is not a van life destination like any other. It is a National Park (42% of the territory is protected), a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a volcanic island with ecosystems found nowhere else on Earth. These rules are not restrictions — they are the conditions that allow van life freedom to exist sustainably on the island.

Why respect is non-negotiable

⚠️ Context

Tourist pressure in Réunion is real — and the authorities do not hesitate to close spots when abuses are reported. Several car parks and camping areas have already been shut in recent years due to damage, abandoned litter and disrespectful behaviour.

Every van-lifer is responsible for preserving these spots for those who come after. Réunion's residents are proud of their island and deeply attached to its environment — disrespectful behaviour is noticed and reported to the authorities. The local community can have a spot closed within a matter of weeks.

The 10 Golden Rules

🗑️
Rule 1
Zero Waste — Take Everything With You

The most fundamental rule and the most frequently broken. Everything you bring in, you take back out. No litter left behind, not even in an overflowing public bin. The zero-waste rule applies to cigarette butts, bottle caps and food packaging too.

✅ Do
  • Always keep a bin bag in the van
  • Sort your waste (recyclable / non-recyclable)
  • Pick up other people's litter if you see it
  • Carry your rubbish to the next recycling point
🚫 Never
  • Leave litter "because there's a bin nearby"
  • Bury or burn waste
  • Throw food scraps into nature
  • Forget cigarette butts
🚿
Rule 2
Biodegradable Products Only

Réunion's rivers, natural pools and lagoons are fragile ecosystems. Conventional chemical products destroy corals, kill fish and pollute groundwater.

✅ Use
  • Certified organic solid shampoo bars and soaps
  • Concentrated biodegradable washing-up liquid
  • Toothpaste tablets or natural toothpaste
  • Solid deodorant or alum stone
🚫 Avoid
  • Conventional shampoos near waterways
  • Sunscreen containing oxybenzone
  • Non-biodegradable washing-up liquid
  • Aggressive antibacterial products
💡 Sunscreen: Choose mineral sunscreens (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide) over chemical filters. Conventional sunscreens are believed to damage coral reefs — some local communes are considering banning them.
🔇
Rule 3
Silence after 10pm

Nighttime silence is a fundamental mark of respect, both for fellow campers and for local wildlife (endemic birds, petrels nesting at altitude after dark). Music and loud conversation before 10pm only. Generators are strictly prohibited at wild camping spots.

🔥
Rule 4
No Fires Outside Designated Areas

Open fires are strictly prohibited in Réunion. The island has suffered devastating wildfires that have destroyed thousands of hectares of endemic vegetation. The fire risk is particularly high during the dry season (May to November).

🚫 Zero tolerance: Lighting a fire outside a designated area is a criminal offence punishable by a fine of up to €750 and a prison sentence if a fire breaks out. Your van is fitted with a gas hob — that is your only permitted cooking method when wild camping.
🌿
Rule 5
Do Not Touch Flora or Fauna

Réunion is home to hundreds of endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. Picking plants, capturing animals and damaging vegetation are prohibited in the National Park and carry severe penalties.

Do not pick flowers, do not approach bird nests, observe sea turtles from a distance, do not capture endemic lizards or insects, and never walk off marked trails within the National Park.

💡 Petrels: These endemic seabirds nest at altitude at night and are attracted and disoriented by artificial lights. At high-altitude spots (Maïdo, Pas de Bellecombe), switch off external lights after 9pm during the nesting season (October–March).
🚗
Rule 6
Park Only on Hard Surfaces

Your van weighs between 2 and 3 tonnes. On soft or vegetated ground, it can irreversibly damage vegetation and compact the soil. In Réunion, certain habitats are extremely fragile — highland wetlands, vegetated lava formations, cirque meadows.

✅ Suitable surfaces
  • Tarmac and concrete
  • Compacted gravel
  • Designated car parks
  • Compact volcanic ash
🚫 Avoid
  • Grass and vegetation
  • Wet or muddy ground
  • Riverbanks (flash flood risk)
  • Fragile vegetated lava
🚽
Rule 7
Manage Your Wastewater Responsibly

There is no grey water collection system in Réunion. Washing-up and shower water drain directly into nature — making the use of 100% biodegradable products absolutely essential. Move at least 50 metres away from any watercourse before washing yourself or doing the dishes.

💡 Our recommendations

Aleppo soap, black liquid soap, Marseille soap-based washing-up liquid, shea butter solid shampoo — effective, economical and completely harmless to Réunion's ecosystems.

💡
Rule 8
Dim Lights, Switch Off Headlights

Switch off your headlights as soon as you are parked. Use a red head torch rather than a white one for night-time movement (less disruptive to wildlife). Réunion has one of the finest night skies in the southern hemisphere — make the most of it!

👋
Rule 9
Respect Local People and Creole Culture

Réunion is an island with a rich, unique Creole culture. Its people are warm and welcoming — but they expect in return a genuine respect for their way of life, their land and their traditions. Always greet the locals, ask permission before parking near a private property, and show an interest in Creole food and local markets.

💡 The "zoreil" culture: In Réunion, mainland French visitors are called "zoreils". The nickname is affectionate but can turn critical if you come across as disrespectful. Show curiosity and humility — you will be welcomed like nowhere else.
📋
Rule 10
Leave the Spot Better Than You Found It

This is the ultimate principle of responsible camping, adopted by the global van life community under the name "Leave No Trace". In Réunion, we go further: leave every spot in better condition than you found it. If you see litter left by others, pick it up. Report degraded spots on Park4night. Share these rules with fellow van-lifers you meet on the road.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a barbecue when wild camping in Réunion?
No, open fires and barbecues are prohibited outside specially designated areas. The fire risk is too high on the island. Your van is fitted with a gas hob. Some campsites have dedicated barbecue areas — that is the solution if you want a grill.
Where can I empty the wastewater from my van in Réunion?
There is no grey water collection system in Réunion — which is why using 100% biodegradable products is essential. For the Ford Nugget's chemical toilet, simply empty it into public toilets or campsite facilities, which are easily accessible all over the island.
Can I pick wild fruit when camping in Réunion?
Within the National Park, all picking is prohibited. Outside the Park, picking small amounts of fruit for personal consumption (wild guavas, wild passion fruit) is tolerated, but never in large quantities. Always respect private property.
Are there natural hazards to be aware of when camping in Réunion?
Yes. The main risks are: sudden flash floods in ravines (never camp in a ravine bed), volcanic eruptions (check the OVPF), cyclones in season (November–April) and rockfalls on certain cirque slopes. Always check conditions before each stage of your trip.
