Discovering Maïdo by Campervan
Sunrise over the Mafate cirque, vertiginous viewpoints, tamarin forest and Creole culture — explore Maïdo from your van, at your own pace.
Réunion is full of breathtaking scenery — majestic mountains, lush tropical forests and spectacular panoramas. Among all its natural gems, Maïdo stands out for its stunning beauty and unique appeal. Perched at over 2,200 metres above sea level, it offers a dramatic bird's-eye view over the Mafate cirque, one of the most remote and spectacular sites on the island.
Why explore Maïdo by campervan?
One of the most obvious advantages of travelling by campervan in Réunion is the freedom and flexibility it offers. You can plan your own itinerary and take all the time you need to explore every corner of Maïdo at your own pace, without depending on a bus or a guide.
Whether you want to linger at the panoramic viewpoints or head off on the nearby hiking trails, the van gives you complete freedom to decide when and how long to stop at each spot.
To watch the sun rise over the Mafate cirque, spend the night in your van on the Maïdo road and set off on foot towards the viewpoint from 5am. A truly unforgettable spectacle.
Panoramas & vertiginous viewpoints
The Maïdo viewpoint offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in the entire southern hemisphere. The sheer drop down into the Mafate cirque — this roadless cirque accessible only on foot or by helicopter — leaves you speechless at sunrise and throughout the day.
Along the route, several intermediate viewpoints punctuate the Maïdo road, each offering a different perspective over the tamarin forest, the ravines and the western ridgelines. With your van, you can stop at every single one without a care.
Maïdo is often clouded over in the afternoon. Head up early in the morning for clear skies. Bring a jacket — it can be chilly at 2,200m even in summer.
Creole culture & villages along the way
Maïdo is also a wonderful opportunity to discover Réunion's Creole culture. Travelling by campervan, you can stop in the picturesque villages along the route — Saint-Paul, Tan Rouge, La Possession — and meet the island's warm-hearted locals.
Try delicious Creole food from a roadside food truck (roulote), discover local traditions and browse the village markets. This closeness to local life will make your drive up to Maïdo all the more enriching.
On the way to Maïdo, stop off at the Saint-Paul outdoor market (Friday mornings) to stock up on Creole provisions before heading up: carris, bouchons, fresh fruit and local spices (épices péi).
Bivouac spot: the Maïdo road
To experience Maïdo at its most intense, park your van at the bivouac spot on the Maïdo road — an ideal position just before the viewpoint, surrounded by tamarin forest and far from city noise.
Nights here are cool and star-filled. In the morning, just a few minutes' walk brings you to the viewpoint in time for sunrise. Check Park4night for all the practical details about the spot.
