Active volcanoes, lush cirques, black sand beaches, scenic roads… discover the must-sees of the "Intense Island" from your campervan.

📅 2025 ⏱️ 12 min read 🚐 Campervan road trip

Réunion Island defies all superlatives. On barely 2,512 km², you'll find an active volcano, three cirques listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, white and black sand beaches, tropical forests, and lunar landscapes. A concentrate of raw nature, all accessible by campervan.

Travelling by van on the "Intense Island" means total freedom: waking up at sunrise facing Piton de la Fournaise, enjoying your coffee with a view over the cliffs of Mafate, cruising along the wild southern coast. This guide introduces you to the 9 must-see spots for your Réunion road trip.

1

Piton de la Fournaise

🌋 Active volcano Piton de la Fournaise, Réunion's active volcano

Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. From the Pas de Bellecombe-Jacob viewpoint, the panorama over the Plaine des Sables caldera is breathtaking. Every year, it erupts several times, offering a unique natural spectacle.

In a campervan, the advantage is huge: sleep nearby and set off at dawn to reach the summit before the crowds. The road crosses the Plaine des Cafres then the Plaine des Sables — an otherworldly, red and mineral landscape.

📍 Practical info

Access: Forest road from Bourg-Murat (RN3). Open outside eruption periods. Hike: 3 to 5 hours for the tour of the Dolomieu crater. Tip: Arrive at the car park before 6 a.m.

2

Cilaos Cirque

⛰️ UNESCO Cirque

Nestled at 1,200 metres altitude, the Cilaos cirque is probably the most accessible and photogenic of Réunion's three cirques. Vertiginous ramparts, silver waterfalls, terraced crops, and a Creole village with its thermal baths and vineyards — an essential stop.

The road leading up there is one of the most winding in France — 400 bends from Saint-Louis — but each turn reveals a more stunning panorama than the last. From Cilaos, try the trail to the Piton des Neiges (3,070 m), the highest point in the Indian Ocean.

💡 Campervan tip

Park your van in the village the night before to enjoy Cilaos in the morning mist. Avoid the road during cyclone season: it's often cut off by landslides.

3

Mafate Cirque

🥾 Accessible on foot only

Mafate is the only cirque in Réunion inaccessible by car. No roads, no mobile signal. Only trails, hamlets clinging to the cliffs, and a preserved Creole community. To enter Mafate, you lace up your hiking boots and set off on foot.

From your van parked at Maïdo or Roche-Plate, the main entrances (Col des Bœufs, Rivière des Galets) are accessible on foot. Once inside, stay in the hamlet guesthouses (La Nouvelle, Marla, Aurère…). A world apart, out of time.

📍 Main entrances

Col des Bœufs: from Plaine des Tamarins. Rivière des Galets: from the west coast. Maïdo: viewpoint with a plunging view over the cirque, accessible by van.

4

Salazie Cirque

💧 Waterfalls & forests

Salazie is the most lush and humid cirque on the island. Tree ferns, wild banana trees, and waterfalls tumbling from 300-metre-high cliffs — everything here is verdant. The Voile de la Mariée waterfall, visible from the road, is one of the most impressive on the island.

The village of Hell-Bourg, listed among the most beautiful villages in France, deserves an extended stop: its Creole houses with flower-filled verandas are a feast for the eyes.

📍 Not to be missed

Voile de la Mariée Waterfall — visible from the RD48. Hell-Bourg — listed village, perfect for lunch. Mare à Poule d'Eau — peaceful pond at the heart of the cirque.

5

Maïdo & Plaine des Tamarins

🌅 Panoramic view Panorama from Maïdo over the Mafate Cirque

Maïdo (2,200 m) offers one of the most striking panoramas on the island: a 2,000-metre plunge over the Mafate Cirque. Sunset and sunrise from this viewpoint are unforgettable moments. Sleeping in your van at Plaine des Tamarins (1,800 m) lets you be there at first light.

Plaine des Tamarins is an endemic forest unique in the world. The air is cool, sometimes misty, and nights are chilly — pack warm gear for your van!

⏰ Best time

Arrive at Maïdo before 7 a.m. to see the clouds below you and the Mafate Cirque bathed in golden light. After 9–10 a.m., the mist often rises.

Sleeping in your van at 1,800 metres altitude at Plaine des Tamarins, waking up at 5:30 a.m. to catch the sunrise at Maïdo — these are the kind of mornings that make every kilometre worth it.

Saint-Gilles-les-Bains & the West Coast

🏖️ Beaches & lagoon

The west coast is home to the only white sand beaches and protected lagoon on the island. Saint-Gilles-les-Bains is the main seaside resort, with its restaurants, surf shops, and Creole bars. Ermitage beach, with its turquoise waters, is ideal for snorkelling.

Further south, Saint-Leu is the surfing capital of Réunion. In a campervan, you can drive the entire coast in a day, stopping at any beach that catches your eye.

🦈 Important — Shark safety

Swimming outside the marked lagoon is prohibited or discouraged on many beaches. Only swim in supervised areas protected by nets (Ermitage beach, Boucan Canot).

7

The Wild South

🌊 Volcanic coast

The Wild South is Réunion's hidden face — raw, volcanic, striking. Between Saint-Philippe and Saint-Pierre, the coastal road runs along lava flows that reached the sea during recent eruptions, creating strikingly beautiful black, mineral landscapes.

The black sand beaches of Grande Anse and Manapany, the natural rock pools, the blowhole at Saint-Philippe — so many treasures accessible from your campervan.

📍 Key stops in the Wild South

Grande Anse: black sand beach, picnic spot. Manapany-les-Bains: natural rock pool. Saint-Philippe: the blowhole & recent lava flows. Le Baril: sunset from the panoramic tables.

8

Plaine des Cafres & the Highlands

🌿 Island highlands

Plaine des Cafres, at 1,500 metres altitude, is the crossroads of Réunion's highlands. Cool, misty, green — an unexpected Réunion. Bourg-Murat is the ideal base to set off for the volcano, visit the Cité du Volcan museum, and stock up on supplies.

Further east, the Bélouve forest and the Rivière des Marsouins cliffs offer unique forest hikes. The Nez de Bœuf viewpoint, overlooking Cilaos, is accessible from Plaine des Cafres.

🌡️ Watch out for the cold

In the highlands, temperatures can drop to 5°C at night, even in the southern summer. Prepare your van: warm blankets and insulation are essential.

Practical tips for your campervan road trip

Travelling by campervan in Réunion requires a few adjustments. Here are our tips for enjoying the island to the fullest with no unpleasant surprises.

🗓️

Best time to go

April to November (southern winter) to avoid cyclones. Set off early to catch the cirques cloud-free.

Refuelling

Fill up before heading into the highlands. Petrol stations are rare above 1,000 m. Carry water.

🅿️

Parking

Many forest car parks and dedicated areas available. Avoid camping on the roadside in residential zones.

🛣️

Narrow roads

Roads to the cirques are very winding. Check the weather — landslides happen often.

📶

Mobile coverage

Great coverage at low altitude, patchy in the cirques, non-existent in Mafate. Download offline maps.

🌡️

Varied temperatures

From the coast (30°C) to the highlands (5°C at night). Réunion offers every climate — dress in layers.
