Where to eat well in Réunion?

Carri, rougail, bouchons, samoussas… Réunion's cuisine is one of the richest in the Indian Ocean. Our favourite spots for eating local straight from your campervan.

Réunion's gastronomy is a delicious blend of French, Indian, Malagasy, Chinese and African influences. Eating in Réunion is a journey within the journey. And from your campervan, you have privileged access to the real local spots — far from the tourist restaurants, close to family tables and authentic markets.

Creole cuisine: 5 essential dishes

🍛 Must-tries Creole cuisine: 5 essential dishes

The carri is Réunion's national dish — a type of curry made with local turmeric (safran péi), served with meat or fish, rice and pulses (lentils or kidney beans). The rougail saucisse is another icon: a spiced tomato sauce with smoked sausages.

Don't leave without trying bouchons (steamed pork dumplings), samoussas (filled with meat or vegetables) and cari requin (shark curry), a speciality of the South. For dessert, fried salt cod with vegetable achards is a classic on Creole tables.

🌶️ Local spices

Safran péi (turmeric), ginger, piment cabri, massalé — these spices make all the difference. Find them at every market on the island.

Markets: eating local for less

🛒 Markets

Street markets are the ideal place to eat local, fresh and affordable. Saint-Pierre market (Saturday mornings): the liveliest on the island, with its takeaway carri stalls, exotic fruits and spices. Saint-Paul market (Friday mornings): an authentically Creole atmosphere.

Roulotes (food trucks) that set up along roadsides at lunchtime are a Réunion institution — look for the ones with the longest queue, it's always a sign of quality.

💰 Approximate prices

Full carri plate at the market: €6–10. Bouchons (5 pieces): €3–4. Samoussas: €0.50 each. Fresh fruit juice: €2.

Our favourite spots in Saint-Pierre

📍 Saint-Pierre

Saint-Pierre, the capital of the South, is the island's gastronomic hub. The Terre-Sainte waterfront is packed with fish and seafood restaurants overlooking the harbour. The market district offers family-run Creole eateries at very affordable prices.

For an authentic carri, seek out the informal 'chez Madame' spots run by Creole families in residential neighbourhoods — the best tables have no official sign above the door.

🐟 Southern speciality

Saint-Pierre's shark curry is a unique local speciality. Try it at the restaurants along the Terre-Sainte harbour.

Our favourite spots in Saint-Denis

📍 Saint-Denis

The capital boasts an impressive variety of culinary options. Head to the Barachois waterfront district for evenings out, and to the covered Chaudron market for local lunches. Rue Maréchal Leclerc is lined with shops and restaurants from every culinary tradition.

The Indian restaurants in the Tamil quarter serve biryanis, dosas and curries of rare authenticity. Expect to pay €8–15 for a full meal.

🍜 Chinatown

Saint-Denis has a large Sino-Réunionnais community. The Chinese quarter, around Rue du Maréchal Leclerc, is home to excellent Asian restaurants.

Cooking in your van: the best of both worlds

🍳 Van cooking

Cooking in a campervan lets you combine market shopping with home-cooked meals. Start your day with a market stop, pick up spices, vegetables and fresh fruit, then prepare your carri in the van's kitchenette.

Quick rougail tomates recipe: fresh tomatoes + onions + piment cabri + fresh ginger + a drizzle of oil + salt. Crush everything together with a fork, leave to rest for 30 minutes. Serve with rice.

🍅 Bonus recipe

Vegetable achards (cabbage, carrots, green beans) + turmeric + vinegar + salt. Ready in 10 minutes, keeps for 3 days. The universal Creole side dish.

In Réunion, eating isn't a break from the journey — it's one of the most beautiful stops along the way.
