The Botanical Trail of the Plaine des Cafres
Discover a flora found nowhere else on Earth along this lush highland trail in Réunion Island, easily accessible by van.
Réunion Island is home to an exceptionally rich flora, with many endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. The botanical trail of the Plaine des Cafres is an invitation to discover this incredible natural heritage on an accessible walk through the island's highlands, open to all.
By van, this trail makes an ideal stop on your way up to the volcano or while exploring the highlands. Allow 2 to 3 hours to make the most of it.
Trail Overview
The botanical trail of the Plaine des Cafres winds through dense high-altitude vegetation at approximately 1,400 to 1,600 metres. Well-marked and well-maintained, it is suitable for all levels, including families with children. Educational panels along the route help you identify the species you encounter.
The walk takes between 1h30 and 3 hours depending on your pace and how often you stop. The terrain is generally flat with a few gentle inclines — ideal for a relaxed outing between adventures.
Bourg-Murat, Plaine des Cafres (8 km from Saint-Pierre via the RN3). Parking is available at the trailhead.
Réunion's Endemic Flora
Among the species you'll encounter, the tamarin des Hauts (Acacia heterophylla) is the emblematic tree of Réunion's highland forests — endemic and protected. You'll also come across branles (tree heathers), fanjans (tree ferns) and a wealth of colourful wild flowers.
In the austral spring (October–November), certain areas burst into spectacular bloom. Keep your eyes open: endemic birds such as the tuit-tuit and the Réunion black bulbul nest in these forests.
The Réunion bulbul, Réunion black bulbul and Réunion harrier (Maillard's harrier, an endemic bird of prey) are frequently spotted along this trail.
How to Get There by Van
From Saint-Pierre or Saint-Denis, head to Bourg-Murat via the Route Nationale 3. The village is approximately 45 minutes from Saint-Pierre and 1h15 from Saint-Denis. The trailhead car park is signposted from the village centre.
You can leave your van in the car park and set off on foot. Access is free. For overnight stays, several parking areas nearby allow you to sleep in your van before an early morning departure towards the volcano.
The Plaine des Cafres is often misty in the morning. Wait until 9–10am for the best visibility, or set off very early to catch the golden morning light.
Practical Hiking Tips
Hiking shoes are recommended — the trail can be muddy after rain. Bring a light waterproof jacket and a warm layer: the altitude and mist can quickly drop the temperature. Sunscreen is still essential despite the cloud cover.
Bring enough water (at least 1L per person) and a packed lunch to enjoy a break in the heart of nature. Picnic tables are available near the trailhead.
Easy to moderate. Suitable for families with children aged 6 and over. Low elevation gain. Duration: 1h30 to 3 hours.

A few kilometres away, the Nez de Bœuf viewpoint looks out over the Cirque de Cilaos from 2,200 metres altitude — a breathtaking panorama accessible by van.
Morning: botanical trail. Lunchtime: picnic and Cité du Volcan. Afternoon: drive up to Pas de Bellecombe for the sunset over the volcano.
